Students took the flat plane of cardboard and constructed 3D objects from them, starting with verb sculptures that brought the principle of movement into still forms, then finishing with creating sculptures that they could wear and move in. This work was produced by high schoolers during the 2025-26 school year.
To Surround
After discussing movement and texture in scultpure, students were given an exhaustive list of verbs to chose from. Students then created a small cardboard sculpture that evoked that verb.
To Split
To Gaze
To Explode
Students examined how cultures across the world use masks and costumes for ritual and celebration, then asked to transform their bodies using wearable cardboard sculptures.
The wearable sculptures were documented with video to highlight movement.
This unit asked students to use watercolor and portraiture techniques in order to capture a person's humanity, not just likeness.
Students were introduced to drawn portraiture through the Loomis method, then explored identity and emotion through abstract expressionism, combining the two in a reflective self portrait.

During the final critique students added post-it notes to other their peer's work, writting an adjective that describes the piece.
